THE TORONTO SCHOOL OF ART CLOSES AFTER MORE THAN 40 YEARS OF OFFERING ALTERNATIVE ART EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Last Friday, November 30th, the Toronto School of Art, an iconic alternative to mainstream art education, closed its doors for good due to declining enrolment, declaring bankruptcy protection.

Back in the day when I attended the full time diploma and certificate program in the mid 90s, enrolment was high, the program was a 24/7 all-consuming endeavour and we thrived on its inherent intensity. We loved what we did and we became a passionate group meeting up in and outside of classes for creative extracurricular activities and fun with fellow teachers and students that even after so many years, carries us along together to our present day.

On behalf of GAS, we offer our sincerest condolences to all students and instructors for this terrible loss to the city at large.

We look forward to the potential future opening of a new Toronto School of Art with a reformed program and philosophy that will meet student's needs in today's social context.
