Our first eight months...

It has been a bit of a whirlwind. I am overwhelmed by this welcoming neighbourhood, where I also live.
Your reception could not have been more gracious, or more supportive.
You have made Gerrard Art Space much, much better.
Better than I could have ever imagined.
Thank you from the bottom of my very soul.
Thank you to every person who has ever walked through our door. Thank you to all of you who keep coming back.
I hope you continue to do so throughout 2013.

Yours kindly,

Joanne Filletti

THE TORONTO SCHOOL OF ART CLOSES AFTER MORE THAN 40 YEARS OF OFFERING ALTERNATIVE ART EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Last Friday, November 30th, the Toronto School of Art, an iconic alternative to mainstream art education, closed its doors for good due to declining enrolment, declaring bankruptcy protection.

Back in the day when I attended the full time diploma and certificate program in the mid 90s, enrolment was high, the program was a 24/7 all-consuming endeavour and we thrived on its inherent intensity. We loved what we did and we became a passionate group meeting up in and outside of classes for creative extracurricular activities and fun with fellow teachers and students that even after so many years, carries us along together to our present day.

On behalf of GAS, we offer our sincerest condolences to all students and instructors for this terrible loss to the city at large.

We look forward to the potential future opening of a new Toronto School of Art with a reformed program and philosophy that will meet student's needs in today's social context.

IN RETROSPECT...

Noella Kyser's "Offerings"

Although Noella Kyser's collages appear as whimsical  eye-candy to the emotional eye, they are upon closer scrutiny, deliberate metaphorical depictions of growth and malleability that bear an essentially hopeful perspective about "life"; a necessary ingredient for remaining humane in today's less than jovial world. As I look around the white walls of the north gallery where Offerings hangs, I'm struck by the work's attitude of freshness and simplicity in symbolic relation. The surrounding white walls are a world in itself, a vessel with ground, nurturing the seeds of art in it's shell both born of and sheltered from the skeptics' world outside.

Joanne F. Filletti's "Glorious Forms"

The colour and movement in the earth tone nature of Glorious Forms provokes a raw reading of the process of creation; namely, in order to grow as an artist and a human being, she always starts at the beginning, her origin. In the dramatic blur of the spontaneous eruption of life, there are no unrealistic aberrations of stylized contours, memorized lines separating negative and positive space, softening of strokes, nor accents of artifice in colour or narrative. Gesture is the original form, tone is the gradation of light playing on the form, and the form itself is rooted on the ground from whence it was born. Joanne Filletti has undertaken the responsive task of leaping from habitual re-production of typical forms into the making of ones more glorious, more aggressive and more real.

Workshop

SERIOUS FUN  at  GAS

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30th FROM 10.30 AM to 3.30 PM
A 5 HOUR MONOPRINT WORKSHOP

With
NOREEN MALLORY

Toronto artist Noreen Mallory accidentally discovered MONOPRINTING 25 years ago while learning lithography. She soon realized that, while THE MONOPRINT was definitely fascinating in its process on a press and what it produced, the experience surprisingly enriched her practice of drawing and painting.

MONOPRINTING IS EMPOWERING

Eager to share empowerment she developed ways of MONOPRINTING WITHOUT A PRESS during the many years of teaching drawing and painting at the Saidye Bronfman Center School of Fine Art in Montreal and in her own studio. Anyone can MONOPRINT on their own when they know how.

We have all loved working with the process, what it produces and what we have learned from it. All art making will benefit from the MONOPRINT experience.

It is truly  “SERIOUS FUN”

To find out more about Noreen, please refer to her website
